Communication Skills

Below are examples of the written and oral presentation skills I have cultivated over the past two years.

Writing:

My written communication skills have largely developed through writing reports and essays for my MIS courses these past two years.  The examples I have provided below show a range of written work.  My final essay for ISI 5301 Information and Society demonstrates a standard, argumentative essay on the subject of democracy and fake news.  In contrast, my term paper for ISI 5703 Gestion des ressources informationelles is a comparative essay of Theodore R. Schellenberg and Terry Cook's methods of archival appraisal.  Lastly, for ISI 6371 Learning and Instruction, I wrote a reflective essay on a microlesson I gave the class on how to make lists on Twitter.

Presentation:

I have also improved my communication skills in terms of oral presentations and creating websites.  In ISI 6371 Learning and Instruction, I planned many lessons for the class.  Below is an example of a PowerPoint I created for a lesson on evaluating information sources on the Internet; it includes an agenda for the lesson, learning objectives, and facts about fake news and how to recognize it.  Furthermore, in ISI 5301 Information and Society I made a Wordpress blog on Indigenous Literature.  It demonstrates my experience with organizational design and layout.  Finally, for ISI 5705 Principes de gestion pour le professionel de l'information I, along with two classmates, created a review of the Canadian Museum of History's website and how to improve it.  This involved making recommendations about how to make the site and its search engines more user-friendly.

Beyond my graduate work, I also refined my oral communication skills during my co-op placement with the Library of Parliament.  While there, I was tasked with conducting tours of the library and the rare books room for parliamentarians and their guests.  These were done in both French and English and required extensive knowledge of the library's collection, history, and architecture.
